Oregano Oil

Antiviral

  • In 2014 the Journal of Applied Microbiology published an in vitro study which found that carvacrol, the primary active component in oregano oil, inactivated murine norovirus (MNV) within one hour of exposure. The researchers note the potential of carvacrol as a natural food and surface sanitizer to prevent human norovirus. [Source]

Colitis

  • In 2007 Mediators of Inflammation published an animal study which found that the combination of thyme and oregano essential oils reduced inflammation, colonic tissue damage and mortality and improved weight gain recovery in mice with induced colitis. [Source]

Drug-resistant bacteria

  • In 2016 Frontiers in Microbiology published an in vitro study which found that essential oregano oil combined with silver nanoparticles were effective against multi-drug resistant bacterial strains. [Source]
  • In 2013 Food Microbiology published a study which showed that oregano oil possesses antimicrobial activity against salmonella on organic leafy greens. [Source]

Anti-parasitic

  • In 2000 Phytotherapy Research published a study in which 14 adults with intestinal parasites supplemented 600 mg of oregano oil for 6 weeks. The results showed that several types of parasites were eradicated while others were reduced. Gastrointestinal symptoms improved in 7 of 11 patients with one particular parasite. [Source]

Antiviral properties

  • In 2011 the Brazilian Journal of Microbiology published an in vitro study which found that Mexican oregano oil and its main component carvacrol are able to inhibit different types of human and animal viruses. [Source]

Food Preservative

  • In 2016 Antioxidants published a study which found that oregano oil was an effective natural preservative of raw and cooked chicken breast meat. [Source]
  • In 2011 the Journal of Food Science published a study which found that oregano essential oil was effective in prolonging the shelf life of olive oil by slowing the lipid oxidation process. The authors note that oregano oil could be used as a replacement to carcinogenic food preservative such as butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA). [Source]

Anti Inflammatory

  • In 2012 the Journal of Medicinal Food published an animal study which found that carvacrol reduced edemas and healed induced gastric lesions after 14 days in an animal model, likely through its anti-inflammatory properties. [Source]
